Writer Mark Bego must have had a hard time finding people to criticize Billy Joel. The songwriter is loved by fans for tunes like "New York State of Mind," "She's Got a Way" and "Just the Way You Are," and by environmentalists for his support of fishermen.
But Bego, who has written more than 45 books about celebrities with a circulation of 10 million and whose "Billy Joel: A Biography" comes out in June, appears to have found the pianist's Achilles heel: He's cheap, according to three disgruntled musicians who have played with him: Doug Stegmeyer, Russell Javors and Liberty DeVito.
