Now, with the 2009 Canadian Film Center World Short Film Festival and the 2009 Palm Springs International Short Film Festival scheduled back-to-back, June has become the best month to enjoy a wide variety of international short films. Toronto screened 295 short films from 46 countries from June 16 to 21, 2009, and 315 short films from 41 countries showed in Palm Springs from June 23 to 29, 2009. Never before have so many short films been shown in such a concentrated period of time.
Since death and dogs are recurring elements in many films, here (in alphabetical order) is a review of a dozen outstanding short films screened at two of North America's largest short film festivals. Chicory and Coffee is a charming 9-minute cartoon by Dusan Kastelic about the deceptive preparation of coffee, based on a song by Iztok Mlakar.
