George Yakimovich was a rookie firefighter in Gary, Indiana, when he rushed to New York City to help with rescue efforts after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He basically never left and then became a full-fledged New York City firefighter. “I’ve always wanted to work here,” Jakimovich says, holding his Boston terrier mix, Molly, who became a fire dog.
When it comes to wanting to become a firefighter, New York is the place to be.” Yakimovich had only been in the job for a few months when the World Trade Center was attacked. The Gary fire chief ordered his elite team—veterans trained in confined space rescue—to get to New York immediately.
