In Youth Uprising, Michael Cera plays a hyper-intelligent 16-year-old virgin desperate to break out of the bubble of his boring life. If that description sounds familiar, it's because the Arrested Development star has done it before. But he does it well, and this charming romantic comedy is no exception.
There are hints of a versatile actor here, but the structure adheres to a familiar template. Payne's hit book Youth in Revolt revolves around Nick Twisp (Cera), who spends his time drifting between his unsupportive parents (Steve Buscemi and Jean Smart), ingratiating himself with Frank Sinatra and foreign films.
