An off-duty police officer killed during a break-in in the Bronx was standing just 18 inches from his killer when the fatal bullet struck him in the chest, a detective at the crime scene said Tuesday. Officer Daniel Enchautegui and defendant Steven Armento were close enough to touch when the shooting began in December 2005, Detective Charles Reiss testified.
Their closeness appeared to bolster the prosecution's contention that Armento knew he shot the officer in the predawn darkness.
