Jerry Adler, who has died in New York at the age of 96, worked backstage on Broadway for most of his life and did not first become an actor until he was 62. Director Howard Franklin recalled casting him in the neo-noir The Eye of the Public after a casting expert compared Adler's voice to her friend's father.
