Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen's flamboyant character who will boldly enter American multiplexes on July 10, when he gets there, there won't be many gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people there. But not so many years ago he would have had nothing at all. So there are at least two ways to look at how gay people are portrayed in film and television these days.
In an era where "Will & Grace" has become a hit TV show and "Brokeback Mountain" has won an Oscar, there is clearly a movement toward a sympathetic view of gay people and gay relationships as something that is simply part of life. On the other hand, many gay characters still play minor and sometimes confusing roles on television - such as Olivia Wilde's "Thirteen" on House, who was by turns lesbian, bisexual, straight, self-destructive, confused and determined.
